Oconee Language Lab

The mission of the Language Lab is to promote, enhance, and support language learning through the use of state-of-art language pedagogies and innovative technology.

The Language Lab supports language faculty and students by:
  • Facilitating and supporting the use of innovative technology-based instructional materials and language learning systems
  • Providing the assistance and training necessary to implement these materials and systems in language classes at the university
  • Providing on-site and web-based support

The primary role of the lab is to create an environment where students feel comfortable speaking the language they are learning, and where they can get the help they need in their journey to learn a second or third language. The lab is staffed with upper division language students and native speakers of the language that can help students with pronunciation, grammar, and their writing.

Lab hours may vary, for questions contact the Dahlonega Language Lab.

Hi everyone! Your 1001 and 1002 language classes are 4‑credit‑hour courses. You complete three hours of in‑class instruction each week, and the fourth credit hour is earned through Language Lab work.

Depending on your language, Lab work may include:

  • Meeting with a lab assistant for a conversational check‑in or tutoring appointment
  • Uploading a video or audio recording in D2L
  • Completing an asynchronous language activity
  • Attending an online or in‑person language workshop

What you need to know

  2. Language Lab staff provide ongoing feedback all semester. The Lab is a space to practice and reinforce what you're learning in class.
  3. Sign up early for workshops and tutoring on . Sessions fill quickly, and waiting until the due date may mean no openings. You’ll have two weeks to complete each lab assignment – plan ahead!
  4. Need help? Your campus Language Lab is here for you. Email us or stop by if you have tech issues, questions about an assignment, or want conversation practice or help with course concepts.

In coordination with the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the Department of Modern Languages, the Language Lab offers the WebCape 2.0 Language Placement Test to help students determine their language proficiency and place them in a class that is most appropriate to their level. This assessment is available for Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian and Chinese and can be taken in any of our labs on a walk-in basis during working hours. In addition to the written test, students are also interviewed in-language by faculty in order to help determine their appropriate level so that they may coordinate with their advisors in registering for classes.

For more information about the placement test, please contact the language lab coordinator for your campus.
